The book is based on lectures I gave in Tokyo in 1994 and Rochester in 1995. It gives a very brief introduction to the theory of integrable systems and the theory of loop groups, and it explains how these theories have come to play a fundamental role in the theory of harmonic maps. The main applications are to harmonic maps of "finite uniton number" and harmonic maps of "finite type". Further details can be found in the preface
